Personality refers to an individual’s characteristic pattern of affect, emotional regulation, behavior, motivation, cognition about self and interactions with others that have been longstanding since adolescence. Aspects of our personality include the way we tend to think about ourselves, how we relate to people, how we interpret and cope with events in our environment, how we react emotionally to a situation. When longstanding patterns of thinking, behaving and emotional response are rigid, inflexible and cause significant distress or impairment in functioning, then it is considered a personality disorder.
